Indian Railways has sanctioned a pilot project called ‘Satellite Imaging for Rail Navigation’ (SIMRAN) to develop hardware and software for providing real time train running information to the passengers.

The project has been developed by utilizing global positioning system (GPS).

This project is being out jointly by Research Designs & Standard Organization (RDSO), Lucknow and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, according to the Minister of State for Railways R Velu.

The project would develop techniques to disseminate information on real time basis about train running to the passengers and the general public through display boards of stations, interactive voice response systems (IVRS), short message service (SMS) and the Internet.

The Minister said that field trials for the project is being conducted since May 25, 2007.

He claimed that the objectives of this project have been achieved and verified through these trials.

Velu further informed that the trains which have been selected for field trial under this pilot project include all the rakes of Rajdhani Expresses, Shatabdi Express originating from New Delhi and electric multiple units (EMUs) running between Lucknow and Kanpur.

As on November 16, 2007, 26 rakes of Rajdhani Express, six rakes of Shatabdi Express and seven rakes of EMUs have been equipped with SIMRAN train equipment, and these trains are being monitored through the Internet and SMS services, the Minister added.
